First widespread doping in the Tour de France

Paris - Doping again tarnished the Tour de France performances. Russian rider Alexandr Kolobnev became the first rider is caught doping positive this year.

According to the International Cycling Union (UCI), there is substance hydrochlorothiazide Kolobnev in urine samples taken on 6 July.

"On this day, UCI hydrochlorothiazide discovered the existence of substance in the body of the Russian rider Alexandr Kolobnev WADA accredited laboratory reports based on the Chatenay-Malabry," the UCI said in a statement on Eurosport.

"It was found in urine samples taken from him after the race the Tour de France on July 6, 2011," added the UCI's explanation.

Hydrochlorothiazide is usually used by patients suffering from hypertension and congestive heart failure to remove excess water in the body and reduce expenditures urine.

Having been caught doping, Kolobnev and then resigned from his team, Team Katusha. But the 30-year-old Russian rider could ask for the B sample of his urine checked.

"Alexandr Kolobnev of Team Katusha, after testing positive during the first week of the Tour de France, decided to suspend himself to follow the rules of the UCI and will wait for the B sample," the statement Katusha.
