Modern historians agree that the Qur'an and Sunnah provide power
impetus for the rise of Islamic science and civilization. Both sources are rich with
issues relating to science as a command to seek knowledge,
order thinking, observing and remembrance; award of knowledge seekers, and
science as a tool to make life on earth and the hereafter, and other privileges for
science seeker.
However, the Qur'an and Sunnah are not merely talking about science, but also the object
science of the universe and the human subject. Meaning of the Qur'an and Sunnah
would contain the concept (the seminal concept) about al-ilm al-pious (man) and al-ma'lum
(The universe) are interrelated. And most importantly of all scientific activities
as al-pious man (who knows) is the association constant
with al-Aliim (the All-Knowing). Hence the scholars interpret the word
'Aqala (thinking, binding) by binding to the sciences that we derive from the observation
us against nature with al-Aliim (the Creator). The command "Read with the name
Create your Lord "implies that we relate our reading of the
universe with God. Without science associate with God that we get
be secular, like Western science today. This shows that science
a principle of Islamic civilization is the science that is bound to God, science and theological
instead of a secular science.
Therefore in this occasion will be presented an overview of how
Islamic civilization was built with science in the past and future. What
Al-Hassan stated above is a picture while that in past science
knowledge in Islam was built by the support of power, political stability, economic
and facilities and other infrastructure. But the most important thing first is that al-
Quran and Hadith itself emits a concept that became the driving force
the birth of science.
From the Koran to the tradition of Science
The principle of science and Islamic civilization that is the seminal concept in the Qur'an and
Sunnah. These concepts were then interpreted, explained and developed into
various disciplines of Islamic knowledge. The entire content of the Qur'an and Sunnah
described by the scholars that reflects a point of view of nature, both
natural world and the hereafter is conceptually formed what is now called
Nature view, view live or Worldview.
Therefore, if the Koran is recognized as a source of Islamic civilization, it can be
also said that the worldview of Islam is the principle of Islamic civilization. And
because the core of Islam is the natural view of science it can be concluded
further that science is the principle of Islamic civilization
