Thousands of Israelis Nude Photos Together

More than 1,000 Israelis participated in a celebration of nude photos together at a secret location in the Dead Sea, Israel, Saturday (17/11/2011) morning. This activity aims to promote the sea, which has a very high salt levels, the entry in the list of seven natural wonders of the world, November.

The photography project undertaken by the U.S. photographer Jew, Spencer Tunick, who has worked on various projects man naked photos with different backgrounds, ranging from glaciers in Switzerland until the Sydney Opera House in Australia. According to Tunick, the willingness of someone from a particular country indicates the level of disclosure nude pictures taken of the country.

"In some places, this work becomes more controversial, while in some other places the project is considered as a test of freedom, openness, and respect for rights in the country," Tunick said in a press conference before the shooting.

In Israel, 1,000 people nude photo project at the Dead Sea was protested by the politicians and Orthodox Jewish rabbis, as it is considered as the behavior of "Sodom and Gomorrah". They threatened to take legal steps to stop the intention Tunick. Local community leaders even threatened to call the police to disperse the participants of this event because they are harassing the local community.

That is why, Tunick and the organizers of this event was deliberately kept shooting location until the last moment. Tunick also deliberately chose Saturday as the shooting, because Saturday is the Jewish holiday.

"That's the reason I decided to work on this project on Saturday (Jewish Sabbath), so no one will be near the location and saw the nude from a distance of half a mile and feel abused," said Tunick.

Shooting events during the two hours it finally took place without any interruption. The participants were free to float in the Dead Sea for Tunick photographed. Whether intentional or not, this event was held at Mineral Beach complex, which is located not far from the location of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah according to Jewish tradition and belief.

According to environmental experts, the Dead Sea dry threatened in 2050, unless there is a massive movement to save the environment around it. Sea levels are down as deep as one meter every year and at some point, the coastline has shrunk to one kilometer out to sea.

Ari Frucht, an activist who initiated the campaign of the Dead Sea as one of the seven natural wonders of the world, said the project Tunick photo shoot is expected to raise public awareness about environmental conditions at the Dead Sea and encourage the Israeli government to do something.
