5 Thousand Giant Fossil Mammals Found in Colorado

COLORADO - Within seven weeks, researchers in western Colorado found nearly five thousand bones from ancient giant mammals such as mammoths, mastodons, bison, horses, camels and deer. Also found fossils also other small animals.

The researchers knew that their excavations will require assistance from others, so they enlisted the help of 15 teachers from the area around the excavation site. The teachers are working with scientists and other volunteer diggers.

As quoted from CBS News on Monday (7/11/2011), at this location, the scientists found the bones of 4826, which was estimated to be 50 thousand to 150 thousand years ago.

"You always explain the size of the fossils to the students, but when found it straight, it feels incredible," said Sandy Jackson, one of the archaeologists and anthropology instructor at Colorado Mountain College, participating in this excavation.

The number of animal fossils found in western Colorado, make the scientists berprediksi that was once the site is an ancient lake.

"Fossils of animals, plants and insects that are found contiguous to each other," said Ian Miller, curator paleontologist at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.

"The discovery of the rock layer is like when we're reading a page of history in these locations," he added.
