Deputy Mayor of Kupang Daniel Hurek asking parents not to impose the will to send their children to public schools. Private schools, he said, could be an option. He asserted that the government gives equal attention to both the public and private schools.
"Parents and children tend to choose schools with a cheap excuse, but it is actually a public school or private schools receive the same attention from the government," he said in Kupang on Monday (7/18/2011), responding to complaints from parents whose children do not qualify for entry to public schools.
According Hurek, during these parents and children tend to apply to high school, vocational high school instead of the country (SMK), which has obvious skills base for students.
"Currently many students can not be accommodated. Almost every day the parents came to the Office of Education, Youth and Sports (PPO) and the Office of the Mayor of Kupang that their children could be accommodated in public schools," he said.
He added that the high interest of parents and children to enter schools in the country resulted in the public schools can not accommodate the students because of limited facilities and infrastructure.
"We're doing an inventory and assess students who have not been accommodated, both in junior high and high school to be relocated to private schools," he said.
According to him, the capacity of private schools in the city can accommodate students who do not qualify for entry to public schools, but the tendency of parents and children choose schools so that there is unfilled capacity.
Meanwhile, Head of Education, Youth, and Sports Kupang Max Hallundaka said it is conducting a study and inventory of the number of classes and the capacity and resource teachers in public schools.
"Private or public schools as well, because both received attention from the government. For students who do not pass the selection PSB will continue to be accommodated in private schools," he said.
He added, for students who live around the school will be directed to choose a school nearby so there is no buildup of students at certain schools.
One student trustee, Robert Tabana said, the tendency of parents to send their children to public schools because the tuition fee is much cheaper than private schools.
"The high costs of education in private schools enjoyed by parents, causing the majority of parents in the city to maintain their children go to public schools," he said.
Robert claimed not want to enroll their children in private school, because it is still waiting for the government of Kupang who want to add the group to learn in public school.
"Now the new school year has begun, but I do not want to enroll children in private school because it is still awaiting a decision from the mayor of Kupang which will accommodate students in public schools," he said.
